Get Outside

Ah, the joys of childhood! In a world so increasingly dominated by screens and the rapid pace of technological change, it's easy to forget the simple pleasures that defined the early years for many of us. The '70s were an era where the playground was the center of our universe, and imagination was our primary tool for crafting adventures.

From the freedom of riding a Big Wheel down the neighborhood sidewalks to the timeless games of hopscotch, hide and seek, and playful afternoons with colorforms and dolls – those days were pure, unfiltered fun. We created entire worlds in our minds, hosted tea parties in makeshift kitchens, and let our imaginations run wild. No app is required.

For those who lived through those times, like myself, the memories are golden, tinted with the rosy hues of nostalgia. Finding a pay phone and scrounging for a quarter was our version of emergency planning. And Waze? Who needed it when you had a folded-up map and the thrill of the open road?

Yet, as I observe the streets today, I find a stark difference. The once-brimming playgrounds and sidewalks seem quieter, with fewer children playing spontaneously outside. It begs the question, has the art of imagination been overshadowed by digital entertainment?

This isn't a call for everyone to revert back to the past or to shun modern conveniences. However, it's a gentle nudge to find that inner child that exists in all of us, regardless of whether you grew up in the '70s or the early 2000s. Rediscover the joy of simply being present in the moment, observing the world around you, and cherishing the place you call home. Because, believe it or not, there's beauty everywhere – sometimes in the most unexpected of places.

Take the scene I witnessed in Philadelphia last week. In a less affluent part of the city, a group of young boys turned a simple sidewalk into their football field. Lacking the gadgets and gizmos that many children are privy to, they found joy in the company of each other. Their laughter echoed the sentiments of a bygone era, reminding me of the sheer power of imagination and human connection.

It served as a poignant reminder to my son – and to me – to remain grounded and grateful. While we all have our struggles, it's crucial to recognize and appreciate the beauty and opportunities in our own lives. As those boys have proven, happiness is often found in the simplest of moments.

So, in the spirit of living young, wild, and free, take a pause from the digital realm. Step outside, breathe in the fresh air and engage with the world around you. Volunteer, help a neighbor, or simply take a walk in your local park. The world is waiting, and your inner child is eager to explore.

In a world rife with challenges, from heartbreaking events in places like Israel to personal trials, there's an ever-present need to find solace and joy in the little things. Because when we do, we aren't just reminiscing about the past; we're creating a brighter future. A future where everyone, regardless of their circumstances, can live life young, wild, and free, except where there is absolute turmoil. Pray for those less fortunate and be grateful everyday.
