As Movember progresses, I can’t help but reflect on my father’s life and legacy. I’ve always been open about my story, and today, I’m sharing a deeply personal experience, one I hope will resonate with others. My parents divorced when I was just 9, a tough age for a little girl to process such big changes. My father was an alcoholic, and at that age, I didn’t fully understand what that meant. He loved us, but his struggles kept him distant, and we only saw him when he could manage it. As I grew up, I did my best to reconnect with him when I could.
My dad was the youngest of five, a former Army serviceman, a sports fan, and a quiet soul. He loved his music, old movies, and a good book. He was kind-hearted but struggled with alcoholism, a disease that overshadowed much of his life. The night before my wedding, he didn’t show up, and that hurt lingered with me for years. We barely spoke until one day we got a call—he’d had a heart attack. That call became a turning point. We began to talk again, however sporadically. Though he never met my children, I know he would have loved them. Sadly, he passed away in 2017, leaving behind both fond memories and unhealed wounds.
In 2018, something unexpected happened. A medium approached me, saying that my father wanted to speak. I stood in the middle of my yoga studio, crying as she delivered his messages. He apologized, said he loved us, and expressed so much through this unexpected encounter. It felt like he was finally reaching out in a way I’d needed for years.
Why This Movember Story Matters
Movember is about more than growing a mustache; it’s a reminder of the importance of health, family, and self-care. This story isn’t just about my dad’s struggles—it’s a call for men to take care of themselves. Movember’s goal is to raise awareness about men’s health, from physical well-being to mental health support. If you’re a father, a brother, or a friend, remember to take care of yourself. Go to the doctor, take things in moderation, and look after your body and mind. Your loved ones, especially your children, need you around.

Fathers and Daughters: A Bond That Lasts
Fathers play a vital role in their children’s lives, especially daughters. Little girls—and grown women alike—need their dads for support, encouragement, and play. My father wasn’t a bad man; he was a kind man caught in the grips of a terrible disease. Unfortunately, he kept to himself and never took the time to care for his health. I miss him daily, and I’m sure I’m not alone in that feeling.
Take care of yourself. Go to the doctor, exercise, eat well, and manage your mental health. You only get one body. Make the most of it—for yourself and for the people who love you.
"A daughter’s heart learns to dream when her father lifts it higher. She needs his love like roots need soil—steady, strong, and deep, even if it’s felt from far away."
